The following
represents post made to this website before the advent of the blog.
It's harder to read and search, but it's all there.....
After fairly
consistent prodding and poking from various individuals (yes Graham,
that includes you) I have decided to update the home page and
archive the old news in the usual spot.
The whole site probably needs a bit of a revamp and I may well use
the same system that LiveJournal uses for my
posts there. Not that I necessarily want the two sites linked
so directly as my LJ posts are fairly academic and this is primarily
a personal and professional site. Still, blogging is the way things
are going for me professionally, and as Dr
Stephen Dann noted today over lunch, the stuff I normally publish
at joannejacobs.net is tantamount to a professional-annotated-bibliography-styled
blog anyway, so why not combine the forces?
On procedural
issues here is the agenda for the next several months:
- Australian Marketing Institute
E-Marketing Conference, May 8 2003 - I am on the organisational
committee for this industry conference. Flyers available soon. I'll
also be involved in staging the seminars during the year, as I am
on the Executive of the E-Marketing Special Interest Group.
- Australian
and New Zealand Communication Association Conference, July 9-11,
2003 - I am on the organisational committee for this conference,
am Secretary/Treasurer of ANZCA
and will be one of the Editors of the Conference Proceedings
- Communications Research
Forum, October 2003 - submitting a refereed paper
- Australia and New Zealand
Marketing Academy Conference, December 1-3, 2003 - submitting
a refereed paper
- Teaching Strategic Internet Marketing (x 4), E-Business (x 2),
E-Communications Policy (2 versions), E-Publishing, Strategic Use
of Information Technology (x 3) and Public and Commercial Policy
in the ICT sector during the course of the year.
- Submitting 5-6 journal articles to Media
International Australia, the
Australian Journal of Communications, and the International
Journal of Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, and possibly
the International
Journal of Political Economy.
My media commitments
have been reduced to an on-call basis, which probably is better
promotion for the Brisbane
Graduate School of Business as the last several months, though
very enjoyable, have been a bit of a Joanne Jacobs Show rather than
a promotional vehicle for the ideas and output of the School. I
very much enjoy the opportunity to contribute to news print as well
as broadcast media, so I hope to get those calls, but it's also
nice to be able to prepare well and provide interesting content
for the audience of these media presentations (the next one looks
like it will be for Australia.internet.com
- I've just checked my in-box and have a rather incisive series
of questions from Craig Liddell on the ABC).
I am also still
involved as a back room girl for the National Forum Incorporated,
a project of Graham
Young and his On
Line Opinion Journal. Yes, I mean back room girl. I throw ideas
around at meetings. That's it. I may well submit a few articles
based on those blog posts on LiveJournal. Nothing else :-)
Personally
I plan to spend this year doing less than last year. Yes even after
all those things I have mentioned above, if I contain my work to
just this, I hope I will end the year a little less stressed than
last year! Nine (yes that is *nine*) conference and seminar presentations
last year as well as developing a whole new academic specialisation,
designing and teaching brand new courses, joining several professional
associations and moving immediately into executive roles in those
associations, consultancy work, and publishing rather took its toll
on me. Plus moving to Brisbane at the beginning of the year was
a bit tiring, and getting used to the place does take some time.
But the good news is that I am very happy here, and feel rather
at home. I'm looking forward to investing in property here hopefully
later this year.
On the social
scene, I want to just take things easily this year. No pressure,
no expectations I think is the best strategy. I will miss Andy and
Raechel when they move down to Canberra but I wish them both well
and I promise to stay in regular communication (we'll have to get
you two a blog!). Melissa's baby is due in April (although I have
just heard it may come sooner than that!) and I lok forward to seeing
Melissa and Michael happily starting their family together. I wish
Liz all the very best for her exercise and health kick she is now
adopting and look forward to many mornings of yoga and many coffees,
dinners and great nights out! It's great to have such lovely friends
in Brisbane! I also want to send *hugs* to all of MelbXF and a sepcial
*hang in there - we love you* to Robin
Harrison. Your world tour is amazing, hon. And to my dear GWHS
girlfriends *hugs and love* I miss you all. Finally to my extended
family, the Vogts, Gary,Naomi & Rachel, Trev, Marg, Katherine
& Jessica, Chris, Carolyn & Sam (and baby #2) and the Jacobs
family (Dad - see? I do update every now and then!), and the Dann
Clan I want to say a big *hello, hugs and love* to you all and
I look forward to catching up this year!

And so much
for the last three months...
The trouble
has been that I have presented four conference papers (see publication
details here) and taught five subjects, written a study guide,
flown interstate twice, spent far too much time and money in physiotherapy
for my back, and basically had a fairly stressful three months.
Birthday came and went fairly unspectacularly, but it was great
to see people in Melbourne during the few brief hours I was there
for the ANZMAC conference. I'm about to fly off to Melbourne again
for Christmas and will be back home in Brisbane for New Year. Haven't
worked out what I am doing for New Year's yet, but I know what I
don't want to do, and that's spend time at a party playing
games or just sitting around. I'd rather spend New Year's this year
either out on the town among the beautiful people, or quietly with
a few good friends. Oh well - we'll see what happens.
But the BEST
news of all in the last three months is that my brother, Andy G,
announced his engagement to the lovely Eloise! *BIG HUGS TO YOU
BOTH!* It's just fantastic to see you so happy, and I wish you both
a lifetime of joy and peace. Congratulations and much love to you!

Well so much
for those 2 months. July ended on a good note with teaching and
writing to keep me busy. In August, after some 'issues' with the
apartment, everything started to get hectic again and things started
happening in Steve's life that sort of intervened over everything
else. He resigned, and his brother departed for England and before
you knew it, the month was over. Finally as September dawned, Mum
came to stay and it was great to have her here. *many hugs to Mum*
Thanks for your patience with my work schedule and with my tiredness
at the end of the day. Amazing thing with the weather. It's been
cold pretty much since you left.
Now I'm back
to having papers written (with more to write), study guides to prepare
and the upcoming trip to Canberra to plan for. In the meantime,
several hospital tests have cleared me of any nasty things going
on and instead I'm finishing each day in a fair bit of pain with
a suspected shredded ligament that normally stretches from the base
of the pelvis to the hip. Nasty and uncomfortable, but life (and
work) must go on.

September 2002 |
July
is almost over and I haven't had a moment to do anything. I presented
at the ANZCA Conference at the Gold Coast in the first week of July
and managed to catch up with Dad and Pam, and Tim & Nida on their
holiday at the Coast during the same period. Was just lovely to see
them! Thankyou for having me for the dayand for being such lovely
family!
At the end of the trip was Stephen's brithday. Happy birthday hon!
I'm sorry I *still* don't have a gift for you, but at least I tried.
*hugs and much love*
Now I'm back to teaching and madly writing presentations as well as
study guides, teaching slides and marking. Ack.
My brother's birthday is on Wednesday so *hugs and love* to Andy G
in Sydney! Hope you have a great day big bro. |

June is always
the busiest month of the year. I have completed the study guide
for GSN470 E-Business and am plugging away at Powerpoint slides
and the next study guide. They take a *long* time to get done. I
have the ANZMAC paper due on Friday this week and the Communications
Research forum paper due the following Friday. I will be at the
ANZCA conference the following week, presenting my designs for the
new ANZCA website to the Annual General Meeting. I am also meeting
regularly with the strategic development group on the On Line Opinion
expansion project and am preparing my seminar paper for the Australian
Institute of Management. Have also just returned from Thailand on
a QUT mission for international students, and a quick trip to Melbourne
to do talk-back radio and meet with old Monash co-workers. Some
interesting projects being tackled by Monash with the Biographical
Dictionary going online. Thankyou to my Mum for having me in Melbourne
- was great to spend time with you Mum - and to my friends for making
my stay so restful and happy.
I have also
*finally* updated calendars for June
and July. August coming soon...

Where does
the time go? Straight after the last news post I spoke at the SBCQ
breakfast and Stephen broke his hand. I completed my marking and
submitted results for Semester 1A and began work on the study guides
for subjects beginning in a matter of 8 weeks. My uncle David came
to stay for a few days as he attended medical conferences here in
Brisbane and my mother departed for her trip around Europe. I then
had a pitched battle with the mouse who had set up a nice little
arrangement behind my display units at home and hope I have conviced
it not to return. I then spoke at a Uni of Queensland Sociology
seminar last Friday on the Australian Digital Citizen, and hope
the research may prove useful to others in a similar field. Finally,
we have established just on Tuesday that I am going to Thailand
in June and have my airfares booked for that and the Melbourne trip
in the same week. I've had Hepatitis A & B shots and Typhoid
this week and have yet to get my Tetanus/Diptheria and second Hep
A & B shot.
Oh yeah and
Star Wars:Attack of the Clones opened at midnight last night. :-)
There's my geek nature peeping through again. I just *had* to go
see it. And to celebrate, Steve got his cast off the afternoon.
YAY for him!!! :-)

May 2002 |
Okay
so it's been a busy month. I've begun to do some consultancy work
for the Brisbane City Council and my research students are coming
along nicely. I'm getting towards the end of semester 1A and my e-commerce
subjects have been executively approved through Faculty Education
Committee. I've also picked up some other consultancy work and am
writing papers in the all the while. Next week I will be speaking
at the Society for Business Communicators Breakfast Forum on Knowledge
Management and in a few weeks I have another 3 papers to write.
In the meantime, Steve has been off madly writing chapters of his
book and has been in lockdown period with no communication. I missed
him. It's great to have him back :-) |

April 2002 |
| This
week the news has been good for the career. My PPR (Planning and Performance
Review) went well and I am happy about the plans and support for my
publishing. ABC have asked me to stay on as the morning program's
resident IT and E-Commerce expert in a regular Wednesday morning slot
(9:20am on ABC 612). Next week I will be on the panel for the Brisbane
Institute seminar and the following week I'll be chairing the E-Marketing
SIG seminar. New units need to be finalised next week so that they
may be submitted to Faculty Education Committee the following week.
Things are happening. |
8
March 2002 |
| Unit
outlines for the suite of subjects to be tabled at the Teaching and
Learning Committee and subsequently at Faculty Education Committee
are now almost complete (just waiting on the outline from the Knowledge
Management reps). I begin teaching GSN447 Strategic Internet Marketing
next week and have meetings for the E-Marketing SIG and for a Brisbane
Insitute forum on press freedom in the online era this week. There
are also meetings with research students, a studio interview at ABC
Toowong tomorrow and a journal article to write. I like this lifestyle
:-) |

February 2002 |
Gosh
I'm slow updating this news section aren't I? Well semester 3B at
BGSB has come and gone. I have had in principle approval of the subjects
I'm developing, and I'm ready to start teaching in a couple more weeks.
I have been busily organising the E-Marketing inaugural seminar for
the Australian Marketing Institute, and am looking forward to panel
involvement with the Australia and New Zealand Communication Association
Conference in July at Bond University. I'm keen to keep up my publishing
record this year and would like to write on cross-media ownership,
corporate power in IT industries and e-marketing. As usual, I like
to be on the cutting edge.
On the social scene a hens night, lunch and dinner with ex-pat Melbournites
and a wedding have been on the agenda, and yesterday I spent a quiet
Valentine's Day with Steve. Was nice :-) Thankyou hon. Love you.
Next on the agenda is the start of the teaching year, more edits on
the thesis (when will this *end*??) and looking around to buy a unit.
Nice and busy. ;-) |

February 2002 |
I
spent Christmas with Mum in Melbourne - *love, hugs and thanks to
Mum for putting me up (and putting up with me) for the 8 days I was
there*. Was fabulous to catch up with people too. Thankyou to everyone
who took time out during the busy Christmas season to come see me
- my love and thanks to you all.
New Years Eve was spent with Steve's family celebrating his parents'
Ruby Wedding Anniversary and later with a few friends. New Years Day
Steve and I spent the day together just recovering - but was a great
way to begin the year! Tomorrow is work for real at QUT. I look forward
to a long and rewarding employment there. |

January 2002 |
I
moved to Brisbane on the 17th of November and after a week at Steve's
place - thankyou so much for that, love - I moved in to my place over
two days on the 22nd and 23rd. Many bruises and much exhaustion later,
I really began to settle from the week beginning the 3rd of December.
Pix of the place are now
online. I now have my staff card and computer account with QUT
and with a bit of luck I should have the right key to access rooms
on the 4th floor at QUT sometime later this week. I'm also very much
enjoying having Steve being able to pop around at any time. Makes
me feel more at home to have him about the place! :-) *hugs, love
and thanks to Steve*
Also I'd like to thank all those who offered their support for this
move. My love and thanks go to Mum for putting up with me over all
this and wishing me well when I finally left. More thanks to Kris
for being there on the day I left and to the GWHS girls for their
lovely gift. Thanks too, to MelbXF for a wonderful farewell and to
lovely SydXFers, Marcus and Pam, for joining me by phone that night!
Thanks once I got to Brisbane, to the Dann family for their company,
support and many dinners - and the Bollinger at dinner at my place!!!
:-) Finally, thanks to my new colleagues and friends in Brisbane -
it's lovely to feel so welcomed. |

December 2001 |
| I
returned from Brisbane on the 2nd of November after an exhaustive
time looking for a place to live. I've found a little flat and found
out the Monday after I returned that I had had my application approved.
Yayness. I celebrated my 30th birthday (oh no!!!) with Mum and Kris
and Eloise and had a great time and then continued the celebrations
at the Melbourne Cup on the 6th. Now it's down to the serious business
of moving and leaving this dear old unit behind. I shall miss Melbourne
and all my lovely family and friends, but I am also excited by the
position in Brisbane and look forward to some interesting years up
north. To Steve - I look forward to being close to you, hon. *many
huggles* Calendars for November
and December are now updated. |
13
November 2001 |
| I
fly to Brisbane today to start househunting, and for Rob
& Vicki's wedding this Saturday. I will be visiting the BGSB
on Tuesday and Wednesday and attending the Brisbane
Institute Media Futures seminar with Brian Johns on Tuesday evening.
Can't wait to see Steve
again too!!! :-) |

October 2001 |
Calendars
keep changing and much more work has been done towards the move. I've
been inundated with tributes and lovely messages from students and
colleagues as the semester has finished at Monash University - my
last at that institution. Many thanks to all those who took the trouble
to contact me - your expressions and wishes are deeply appreciated.
*Healing vibes* and much love are sent to Steve, who has badly damaged
his knee and ankle - hang in there hon. I'm thinking of you and so
looking forward to seeing you.
I'm off to Brisbane in another 5 days for the wedding of Rob &
Vicki and to find a place to live. I have quotes from 2 of 3 removalists
and have worked out how to swap across my insurance, banking and other
details. The rest will have to wait till I move in another 3 weeks
or so. |

October 2001 |
| Presented
at the Communications Research
Forum in Canberra last week and the paper seemed to meet with
a positive response. Assoc Prof Susan Dann offered me a ticket to
see the AFL Grand Final on Saturday (which I accepted with glee -
thanks Susan!!!) and we discussed the establishment of an E-Marketing
interest group within the Australian Marketing Institute. Calendar
for October has been updated. |

October 2001 |
| Steve
has been to stay and returned home. I'm still reeling from a week
where the New York WTC and Pentagon were attacked, where Ansett went
under and where I spent my time at either end of Steve's vist at airports.
Right now, planes mean distance, loss, departure. But my life is characterised
by that at the moment anyway. I guess the only thing you can do when
this sort of thing happens is take stock of what you have. To my friends
and family, please know that I love you. To Steve - thankyou, and
I love you more every day. |
21
September 2001 |
| Calendars
for September, October
are now up-to-date with confirmation of Steve's trip to Melbourne
(YAY!!!) and additions of November
and December (note the 'location
unknown' colour scheme). My social schedule is frightening me. Thesis
continues always... |
22
August 2001 |
| More
updates to calendars. I've finished the paper (5,000 words in 2 days
thanks very much) and have marked some essay drafts. I have to develop
some presentation slides for Monash Open day tomorrow, but that should
be pretty straight forward. I'm hoping people will understand that
now is not a good time to hassle me with social stuff. Just need to
get the work done. |
04
August 2001 |
Updated
more of the calendars. Also, there's now a working
record of my holiday in Mooloolaba. *BIG* thankyou to Jean and
Michael Dann for letting me be part of Steve's birthday present.
This week I have to get Chapter 2 of my thesis finished and get a
paper written. Life continues pretty busy. |
30
July 2001 |
| Updated
calendars for July, August,
September and October.
Not all the social calendar is set but I'm trying to spend as much
time on my research as possible. (I'm hoping that by keeping this
news section, things might become a little easier in that respect.) |
20
July 2001 |
| Began
teaching my final semester at Monash University. I have 270 undergrads
studying COM1020
Introduction to Communications Studies and approximately 30 post-grads
studying COM4006/5006
New Communications Media. I'm also teaching in AUS2040 Travel
Writing and New Technologies, I'm supervising COM5004 Insight Projects
(Research projects for Masters by coursework students), and I'm still
developing content for the Open Learning Australia unit, Communications
in the Electronic Age subject which will be available as a 2nd year
subject on campus at Monash in 2002. I am also being bugged on web
issues and trying to fix everyone else's problems. *sigh*. I fully
intend to get the thesis out by the end of November so I'm afraid
I'm not going to be around to solve a lot of these problems. |
16
July 2001 |
Just
returned from Brisbane where I have accepted an offer from the Brisbane
Graduate School of Business, for the postion of Lecturer in
their MBA programs at QUT, to begin in January 2002. Now I've just
got to find a place to live.
