Huh?
What makes you say that?
The monarchy has ceased to become relevant. In most Commonwealth countries this wedding has encouraged countries to question whether they would ever want Charles to become king of their country. In Canada, 55% of citizens have said they are happy to have the Queen as Head of State but feel Canada should become a republic if Charles ever ascends to the throne. In most of the West Indian Commonwealth nations, the monarchy is so irrelevant that the wedding barely registered in media coverage.
I’m very hopeful that Charles’ marriage to Camilla “The Rottweiler” Parker-Bowles will bring about the Republic we so need.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not anti-royal (as so many ignorant people describe republicans). I recognise the historical relevance of the monarchy and its importance during several periods of Australia’s history. I appreciate the monarchy as an heritage relic; an historical curio. I just don’t think it should have any role in Australia’s future.
And I am hopeful that this royal wedding will mark the end of respect people may once have had for the integrity of the monarchy, as producing representatives who are intellectually, socially, emotionally and culturally qualified to become the constitutional chief of our country.
